When visiting Taipei for the first time, you will see a blend of cultures from various parts of Asia. The street markets of South East Asia, Japanese aesthetics and buildings that reminded me of my time in Hong Kong. It is a hub for all things culture, street eats, and history. It can be overwhelming to plan a trip to a capitol city, especially one like Taipei that offers so many amazing day trips throughout Taiwan. Hoping this guide will help for all your delicious food adventures, coastal journeys, or city cruising! Tips when visiting Taipei for the first time Airport info / There are two airports in Taipei – Songshan Airport and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). For traveling to Taipei the Songshan is much more convenient, but TPE may come up a lot more in your searches. Although it is farther away, the MRT now goes from the Airport to downtown Taipei! If your flight arrives when the MRT is not running, take the bus, taxi or Uber. I took a taxi from the airport, and an Uber when leaving. Public transit / Taipei is easy to get around with using trains and buses. Taxis are plentiful […]

During my visit to Taipei, I knew I would be making some day trips. Obviously I love cities, but one must escape to magical places for a change of pace. An enchanted adventure that that was highest on my list was a trip to Jiufen and Shifen (often grouped together for one day). Not too far from the city, they give you a glimpse of another side of Taiwan that you can’t experience within Taipei. Both of these towns you can reach by train/bus, but the easiest way is by booking a day trip to Jiufen and Pingxi with My Taiwan Tour. What once seemed like a forgotten and abandoned city, Jiufen is booming with tourists and crowds eager to see the winding streets and red lanterns. Due to the critically acclaimed movie “City of Sadness”, and Japanese anime film “Spirited Away”, Jiufen has grown in popularity and is now seen as a “must do” when in Taipei. Yes, there are crowds, but some places just deserve them! Shifen, located in the Pingxi District is most known for releasing Chinese lanterns while standing on the train tracks of the old street. Visitors flock to Pingxi once a year for the Chinese […]

Have ever visited Sedona, Arizona, and feel transported into a Martian atmosphere? If so, you will experience the same feelings when visiting Yehliu Geopark. If you closed your eyes and you were dropped right into the park, you would think you were on an alien planet, except for the selfie sticks and instagrammers. The park is located on the north coast of Taiwan and is scattered with mushroom and honeycomb like formations due to sea erosion. Thanks to science and mother nature, we can now gaze at these quirky landscapes for a small fee. Easy to access, Yehliu Geopark is a great way to see the coast of Taiwan and some unique landscapes. Where else can you view natural seascapes shaped like the queens head, ice cream or a Japanese Geisha? Yehliu ended up being a surprise trip for me and only took half a day to explore from Taipei. I was there in about an hour, took some photos, explored, sweat a lot (real talk) and drooled over the sea views. I was back in time to check some coffee places off my list in Taipei in no time! Quick info & Tips Open from 8am-5pm Visiting Yehliu […]

I traded a week of coffee shop exploring in Tokyo for a week of tasting the best of Taipei coffee shops. From large, beautifully crafted spaces, to small easy to miss cafes, Taipei’s coffee scene has taken off (specialty coffee shops are taking over the world it seems in the best way). Like in Tokyo, you can see the baristas take pride in their brewing, roasting and pouring. Of course it’s hard in such a small amount of time to see all a city has to offer in terms of coffee shops, but I tried to reach a few solid ones. Like Tokyo, Taipei coffee shops seem to be growing and growing, but who can complain? While traveling Taipei I needed all the (iced) coffee I could get – humidity zaps your energy. Single origin, powerful espressos and some of the most unique lattes I have ever seen on a menu all reside in Taipei coffee shops and here a few to check out on your trip.
