A resort town by the ocean and a reasonable distance from Tokyo – the perfect getaway. Atami is located on the east coast of the Izu Penisula and is about an hour on the Shinkansen. When we decided to book the trip, I didn’t realize there were so many things to do in Atami, and I certainty didn’t get to them all (more reason to go back)! 7 things to do in Atami Stay in a Ryokan & Soak in an onsen With Atami being a major hot spring resort town, staying in an onsen is a must! “Atami” actually translates as “hot ocean” because of their famous hot springs. Relaxing in a Ryokan by the water, and soaking in the onsens is a great way to start your weekend in Atami. Ryokans can range in price, but you are sure to find one in your budget. Once I found Hotel Resporpia, I knew it would be an excellent choice. The pictures showed western style beds, that continued on to a tatami floor complete with a balcony that looked out to the ocean. In fact, choosing an ocean view is your ONLY option – so makes your decision pretty easy. Check in The room Checking in, I was hoping photos would be a reality, and to my pleasant surprise – the room was perfect! Already impressed by the beautiful lobby, I had a feeling it would be. There is something magical about staying in a Ryokan. Whether it is wearing Yukatas throughout your stay or the insane hospitality that always occurs – they are my favorite lodging option in Japan. My first time experiencing the Ryokan life was in Hakone, another memory that I will FOREVER cherish. Seems to me, great night sleeps also exist in Ryokans.
