When researching where to stay in Atami, it was hard to find a perfect balance of relaxation, great location, and one within a reasonable budget. Once I found Hotel Resporpia, I knew it would be an excellent choice. The pictures showed western style beds, that continued on to a tatami floor complete with a balcony that looked out to the ocean. In fact, choosing an ocean view is your ONLY option – so makes your decision pretty easy.

The room

Checking in, I was hoping photos would be a reality, and to my pleasant surprise – the room was perfect! Already impressed by the beautiful lobby, I had a feeling it would be. There is something magical about staying in a Ryokan. Whether it is wearing Yukatas throughout your stay or the insane hospitality that always occurs – they are my favorite lodging option in Japan. My first time experiencing the Ryokan life was in Hakone, another memory that I will FOREVER cherish. Seems to me, great night sleeps also exist in Ryokans. I thank the rice pillows and healing mineral water from the Onsen for that.

What is great about this hotel, is how at home you will feel if it is your first time at a Ryokan. They have western style beds, AND all the proper makings to sleep in a traditional style room if you wish. I didn’t care where I slept once I woke up to the blue of the ocean and a room full of golden sun, and neither will you.

The bathrooms are small with a bath, but that was not an issue for us as we spent most of our time looking out our balcony or walking around the town. Each room comes with two Yukatas, half robe, slippers, leather soled sandals, a tea set and bathroom amenities. All makings of a relaxing time by the sea.

The Onsen

Having experienced an onsen in the mountains of Hakone, I can now say onsens on the ocean are my absolute favorite. I know, a pretty spoiled comment but also so true. Your jaw will slightly drop as you walk into the gorgeous bath room lined with a wall of windows that look out to the ocean. Having two choices of a jacuzzi style onsen, or still (and very hot) both have a sweeping view of the Sagami Bay. As a bonus, the room where you lay your belongings aside, is fervently taken care of, clean and the attendant makes you feel right at home! Soaking in a Japanese style onsen is an experience I hope you can enjoy on your Japan travels. For a photo and more information, feel free to checkout their website.

Restaurants

Not only is the Resporia within walking distance to many restaurants in Atami, but they have a few of their own. For breakfast, lunch or dinner, head to Shiosai, where you can get fresh seafood as well as food cooked right infront of you at their “Teppanyaki Corner.” For a breakfast buffet easy on the eyes, book your room to include breakfast so you can have a short commute to all their diverse options!

Other Facilities include:

Drink & Karaoke Bar

Gift Shop

Mahjong Room

Natural Care (spa services)

Location

When looking for where to stay in Atami, it is nice to be walking distance to the the station, restaurants, and shops. Resorpia is about a ten minute walk from the station and walk-able to many main attractions such as the Itokawa path, or although a little longer, the castle and museums.

If you are able to stay in Atami, location, ambiance, and a vacation state of mind are needed when you choose where to stay! If I return, I would easily choose the Hotel Resorpia Atami again!
