Five experiences to have on Jekyll Island

I had little knowledge of the barrier islands of Georgia (and honestly other than Atlanta, Georgia was never in the forefront of my mind as a travel destination). The Peach State offers so much more than humidity and a great aquarium. The Barrier Islands or Golden Isles, are an amazing travel destination and I can’t believe they are accessible in such a short time from Jacksonville. Day trip or weekend, enjoying the islands is very convenient. Jekyll Island makes for a wonderful escape, and these five experiences will make your weekend or day trip so enjoyable! There was a small part of us that wanted to add St. Simons Island as a part of our trip, but I am glad we strictly stayed put on Jekyll Island. St. Simons I assume deserves it’s own weekend.

Where to stay

We personally enjoyed staying at the Westin Jekyll Island. On the ocean side of the island, they have bike rentals, a pool and other wonderful facilities. Grab coffee and a snack from the Westin Cafe and head to their terrance to enjoy the ocean view. The location is in the heart of local shopping and places to dine. Next time I think we would stay at the Jekyll Island Club due to the beautiful grounds, restaurant, and wonderful wrap around deck looking out to the Jekyll Creek.

Whether you travel for the first or tenth time to Jekyll Island I hope you are able to have these experiences (and I hope to return and do the same).

Five experiences to have on Jekyll Island

1. Bike through the Island

Renting a bike is fairly easy on Jekyll Island (we used Beachside Bike Rentals, then realized later our own hotel had them once we checked in). The paths through the forest canopy of the island transform you into gorgeous, enchanted-like scenery. The ocean of course is never too far away and it gives you so much freedom to explore the island without worrying about parking a car.

2. Explore Jekyll Island Resort

It is obvious tourists and locals alike love to spend time at Jekyll Island Resort either for a wedding stay-cation or simply to stroll through on a day trip. You can forgo a stay and still enjoy their brunch, dinner or cafe – but I hope to be a guest here next stay.

3. Learn about the history & nature of the island

Mosaic, the Jekyll Island museum is small, but is the perfect place (and important) to learn about this island’s past. Not too far is also the Georgia Sea Turtle Center that is great for kids (and you can see turtles that are being rehabilitated on their grounds). Make sure to buy a ticket package for both of these places for a better deal at the museum (we realized after we bought two individual tickets).

4. Eat by the water

Bike over to the Wharf Restaurant for some wine, cocktails and lunch (or dinner)! Whether you choose to sit inside or outside, you will love the view of the water! This is a place I will make sure to go back to.

5. Sunset picnic at Driftwood Beach

Finally putting our wedding present to use, we had a fancy picnic while watching the sunset at the well-known Driftwood Beach. Grab some beverages, cheese and crackers and make your way in time for sunset. Although popular, you can find your own personalized spot to enjoy the unique oceanside.

I am already looking forward to returning to this charming getaway.
