A trendy, hip neighborhood, Shimokitazawa is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, but still feel those city vibes you love so much. With vogue naming it one of the coolest neighborhoods, you know you will find great fashion, trendy streets, and good food. This Shimokitazawa day guide will talk all things coffee, food and shopping. The small neighborhood is quiet, yet electric, known for live music venues, shows, hair salons, quaint cafes and thrift shops. This area makes for a perfect afternoon when visiting (or living) in Tokyo. To Shop Shimokita Garage is a shopper’s dream, filled with many little stores ranging in product and price. If hopping around from store to store stresses you out, the compartments of the Garage are perfect for you. To those looking for more affordable prices when it comes to clothes, stop at Micmo. Fall jackets, trendy sweaters and other finds await you. The lovers of vintage clothing can head to Flamingo, especially if you are ready to use your wallet. With a US based buyer you will love their collection of American vintage clothes as well as jewelry (I LOVE their earrings) and accessories. You can find this spot […]

Any sort of student filled, artist loving, unique and lively neighborhood usually always catches my eye no matter where I travel (Wicker Park in Chicago is a special one I have in mind). With that said, Newtown is the most hipster, vegan friendly, whole foods loving, granola place I have every been – and that is not an insult! If you love good food, exposed brick in your cafes with unique light fixtures and hanging plants and street art – I think it is time you head down under. So, let’s get down to business. If the few reasons I gave above do not appeal to you, by all means read no further! Just kidding, you should 100% read further as I explain my top three reasons why you should visit Newtown. Food & Coffee Spaces As I was walking along the streets of this neighborhood, I was surprised by how large the area was and how many food options there were! Taking a break from all things sushi and ramen I wanted to eat at every place I saw just so I could review it but, that would have been impossible. Like I have said before, I let […]

If you are in Japan for an extended amount of time, I hope Hakone makes it on your list! Ultimately I am a city girl, but a night in this resort town will always be welcomed especially since Hakone from Tokyo is very doable. As many others before me have said, you CAN do it in a day but since Hakone is known for their amazing hot springs, I suggest staying one night. The trip is truly relaxing, and the views will be even better than you imagined. So let’s get started with some helpful tips to plan your getaway. Hakone from Toyko (Hakone Pass) First, head to Odawara station where you will buy your Hakone passes (look for one of the customer service windows, they are pretty easy to find)! If you do the entire Hakone loop without a pass it is 6300 yen, while the pass is 4500 yen. Every bus, train, cable car etc. is included as well as discounts for some attractions (like the open air museum). Where to stay For the full experience I recommend staying in a traditional ryokan. We stayed at the Aura Tachiban Ryokan in a traditional Japanese room. Who knew sleeping on the […]
