Why you should visit Newtown Sydney

Any sort of student filled, artist loving, unique and lively neighborhood usually always catches my eye no matter where I travel (Wicker Park in Chicago is a special one I have in mind). With that said, Newtown is the most hipster, vegan friendly, whole foods loving, granola place I have every been – and that is not an insult! If you love good food, exposed brick in your cafes with unique light fixtures and hanging plants and street art – I think it is time you head down under.

So, let’s get down to business. If the few reasons I gave above do not appeal to you, by all means read no further! Just kidding, you should 100% read further as I explain my top three reasons why you should visit Newtown.

Food & Coffee Spaces

As I was walking along the streets of this neighborhood, I was surprised by how large the area was and how many food options there were! Taking a break from all things sushi and ramen I wanted to eat at every place I saw just so I could review it but, that would have been impossible. Like I have said before, I let the real food experts do the work so visit here for some restaurant suggestions.

Places I can recommend? Stay awhile at Brewtown Newtown for some breakfast or get a coffee to go as you head out and embrace the area. Later, head to Foodarama for lunch and order the Falafel Burger (with spicy peanut sriracha sauce – need I say more)? The Famous Lemon Ginger Iced Tea is the perfect companion as well.

Wall Art

If you are an art mural hunter, this guide will be helpful, but when I got there I just aimlessly walked around and loved being surprised at every corner.

In this area of the city a match program has been started to pair up property owners with artists who want a mural painted. The owners and artist collaborate on the art they would like and it gets approved by the Inner West Council. Unwanted graffiti is covered and artists get to display their work – win/win? I think so.

I love when cities embrace art while ALSO solving a problem – the initiative is sure paying off! This article explains more on the project – way to go Sydney!

Street Wandering

This neighborhood lends itself to not really having a plan. Between the quirky shops and diverse feel of these streets your eyes will never grow bored of your surroundings. Thanks to the guide I mentioned above, I was able to browse an awesome poster shop called blue dog (major regret not buying an Australia print to bring home) and the displays of each store. I stumbled upon it on my own, but because I had read they had inexpensive art I made sure to take a look!

Take in the unique store displays from colorful chairs to antiques. My favorite was “blind date with a book” where all you know about the books are the common themes. I thought it was the cutest idea! Or stop by All buttons great and small filled with thousands upon thousands of buttons, complete with an online shop as well.

You most likely will happen upon stores I may have walked by, hence why street wandering is a must! Be sure to let me know what other awesome stores you may have come across!

I only had a day before I flew to my next Australian city, but I would have loved to have a drink on one of the rooftops, experience the live music scene or tasted all the cuisine it offers.

Have you been to Newtown? Anything I must do if I return?

Til next time,

Katherine

So glad you discovered Newtown, as an almost local I love it when visitors enjoy the place as much as I do! Breakfasts at Foodarama are among my favourites but I have not tried the falafel roll – that sauce sounds delicious.
You could eat at a different place every night for several weeks and not double up.
